It's Easy Being Green In Workout Clothes. The Frog Is Wrong.

Fitness - Fashion/Gift

America's favorite frog once said, "It ain't easy being green." If only poor Kermit could see how times have changed. When it comes to eco-friendly fitness apparel and accessories, there are so many options and different styles to choose from. Going green for fitness couldn’t be easier.

When Well To Do, a planet-friendly-promoting lifestyle blog, asked me to share my top eco-fitness-couture picks with their readers, I was thrilled and began my hunt for the greenest of green fitness trends. Check out my favorites below and consider jumping on the green bandwagon. I mean, why the heck not? It's not like you have to compromise on style. Plus, these apparel and accessory items don't cost that much more (and in some cases even less) than non-green items. It's good to be conscientious. We do it with the food we put in our bodies. Why not do it with the clothes we put on our backs? At the very least, do it for Kermy. Do that scrawny frog proud.

  1. Begin the greenification process by choosing a Kalyx Sports Bra. My favorite style is made for yoga but that doesn't matter; I'd rock this sports bra for any kind of fitness activity. It has a racer-back which is great for support and free motion. I'm loving this bra for its sexy low cut and built-in cups. A little "shaping" and "enhancing" can't do a girl wrong. And you'll be happy to know that it's made from at least 35% recycled fibers.
  2. Now that you've got good cleavage, time to add an edgy fitness top. I adore this Adidas Sleek Logo Tank for it's curve-hugging feminine fit and asymmetrical zipper detail which you can self-style open or closed. It's made with organic cotton and a glossy Trefoil print.
  3. Put on some pants! I guarantee you won't find a softer pair than Green Apple Active's Fitted Yoga Flare Pant. I discovered this brand at a fitness convention and I have to admit that I bought two pairs of them: 1 for workout and 1 for pajama-loungin'. Made with a lightweight bamboo support jersey, they're seriously silky and super flattering against your skin.
  4. Get rollin' but don't forget to cover up with this NYC cult favorite, the Roli Hoodie, from C.Marchuska. It's made of a sustainable blend of 92% bamboo viscose and 8% spandex.
  5. Never last and never least, your feet deserve some green love too. The Evo Running Shoe by Terra Plana is the way to go. It's a stylish minimalist shoe with an ultra thin puncture resistant sole that offers maximum sensory feedback and maximum protection. Why do you need that? Because most likely you have bad running form or underdeveloped foot muscles from wearing over-cushioned and restricting sport shoes your entire life. The Evo is 100% vegan and made from recycled materials.
  6. Your gear should be as fashionable as your outfit. 2 staples that I recommend for shaping up are the Zobha Manduka EkoLite Yoga Mat and the Mini-Core Ball by Natural Fitness. They're amazing because they're both travel-friendly and made for core strengthening/balancing exercises. The Zobha Manduka Mat is made of natural tree rubber while the Mini-Core Ball is made from non-toxic, phthalate free material.
  7. Pack it up in the Everything Fits Bag by Gaiam, made from 100% recycled polyester. This gym bag is a gem because is has a vented outside compartment to hold stinky shoes and sweaty items that you might not want to mix with your valuables. Plus, there's plenty of room inside for a Yogitoes Sweatless Towel, an outer pocket for an eco-chic filtered water Bobble, and even bottom adjustable straps to hold your yoga mat (like the one mentioned above). Now, isn't that convenient? Why yes it is. See...being green is a cinch!

Being green is easy. Styling Up 2 Shape Up is fun and healthy. Keep an eye on the brands below for eco-fitness-couture at your fingertips.

Give me 1 good reason in the comments section below for why your life is incomplete without a Bobble Filtered Water Bottle (eco-fabulously designed by Karim Rashid) and you're in the running to win it. By leaving a comment that specifically refers to your current water bottle situation (troubles, complaints, etc), you'll be automatically entered for this Green Giveaway which ends on Valentines Day (Feb 14th, 2010). There's a special surprise associated with this giveaway too, so be sure to write something good below as I will be picking my favorite comment.

Love the products showcased! Have you looked at Soybu? They make some super super cute workout apparel, that I am not ashamed to wear out in public. They do alot of fun prints etc. Plus they don't make being green expensive. Here is their URL

MizzFIT February 1st, 2011 1:44PM

Hi CatC,

Just checked out the Soybu website. Thanks for letting me know about them. Just another company that proves how easy it is to be fit & green! Thanks so much for leaving your comment.

I love the gym bag and have been looking for the perfect bag i can wear to work and has a water bottle holder. Do you have any other suggestions that i can see in a store otherwise i think i just may buy this one since i love it! You have great fashion sense!

MizzFIT February 2nd, 2011 5:41PM

Hi Jessica,

I have 2 other gym bag suggestions but unfortunately they're not "green". Check out this one by MPG Sport which has 2 side water bottle holders. It's a heavy duty bag capable of holding a lot, even a yoga mat.;cat,75;item,353;GYM-&-YOGA-BAGS-MPG-YOGA-BAG

And check out this one, called the Space Invader by Jo&Jax;, which is one of my favorites because it's cute without being too big. If I carry a bag that lets me pile stuff into it, I end up with sore shoulders at the end of the day. But this bag limits what I carry so I really love it.

Happy gym bag hunting!

JessicaCC February 3rd, 2011 11:39AM

The space invader is very chic but the "green" bag may make most sense for me...not that i may want my water bottle hanging outside my bag. Decisions decisions. SO i heard from my friend that goes to slim & strong hardcore that you are going tomorrow morning. I took a S & S (not the hardcore) class and loved it! Great class and instructor!

MizzFIT February 4th, 2011 6:49PM

Hi Jessica,

I'm actually planning on going to the BB Bootcamp on Saturday and then doing Slim & Strong on Tuesday of this week. Today didn't pan out as I was supposed to travel and then my flight got canceled. But everything happens for a reason! I'm sure I'll love both as I've only heard superb feedback from everyone who takes Ariane's classes. Really looking forward to it.

The bag from Gaiam is great since it holds your shoes in a separate compartment. You should check out LUG bags too which do the same. Their bags come in many styles and colors so I have a feeling you'll like them. Here's the link to the Lug website below:

Take care and thanks for your comment!

JEWEL February 4th, 2011 9:33PM

JEWEL February 4th, 2011 9:40PM

oh do you have a suggestion for a nice lightweight indoor shoe for pilates or kettlebells that type of thing that I do to DVD in my front room. Id like something with support not a ballet type shoe. Thanks so much
(im also @nankani on twitter)

MizzFIT February 5th, 2011 4:42AM

Thanks Jewel! Are you interested in entering the giveaway too?

MizzFIT February 5th, 2011 4:43AM

Hi Jewel,

Going to send you a few footwear options but looking into this for you based on "green" factor...or does that not matter? Let me know!

MizzFIT February 5th, 2011 4:49AM

And to be perfectly honest, the Evo from Terra Plana is prob the best indoor shoe for the workouts you mentioned since its lightweight and will help strengthen your core and feet.

JEWEL February 5th, 2011 6:57PM

oh I didnt see the giveawy Ill go look. NO I have no preference really if green. I love the EVO but right at this time is a bit $$ for me Thanks for your help!

MizzFIT February 7th, 2011 7:35AM

Anytime! Always here to help. BTW, Puma has some great lightweight pilates-inspired shoes at a nice price point. Check out their website or go to Zappos. Hope this helps!

angela February 11th, 2011 9:46AM

for me, seeing so many half drank water bottles left over at any event, kills me! at least if you don't finish all the water you have in your own eco bottle, at least you know it's yours and you can fill it back up, or pour out the rest. not throw away the whole bottle. love the look of the booble, so modern.

MizzFIT February 11th, 2011 10:02AM

Hi Angela!

I agree. It's so wasteful and unnecessary for our environment. The great thing about the Bobble, not to beat a dead horse but it's such a great feature, is that the cap is attached to a filtering system that CLEANS and makes your water TASTE BETTER! It doesn't get any better than that! You're officially entered into this giveaway! Thanks for leaving your comment!

Robyn February 11th, 2011 10:13AM

Hi MizzFIT!

What an awesome giveaway!! I have seen those bobble water bottles popping up at the gym and I thought what a cool concept! For me it's all about finding a water bottle that is BPA free and the perfect size. I like to be able to carry enough water for my morning without it being too big and bulky. Also, as a health coach it's super important that we filter out those toxins. A water bottle that's the perfect size AND has a built in filter? Hello awesomeness!!

Thanks for sharing!

MizzFIT February 12th, 2011 5:52PM

Hi Robyn,

Sounds like this is the water "bobble" for you! As much as I love it for it's functionality, it's so freaking cool looking that it's kind of irresistible to carry around. Mine came with me to yoga class tonight.
