How to Stylishly Prep for an Amazing Race (from 5K to Marathon)

Why I made this race tips video

I made the video you see above the night before my half marathon on March 14th, 2012 and posted it to YouTube. If you've never been to my channel--Fashionably Fit with MizzFIT--please mosey on over and subscribe! I made this video to encourage you to take the time to Style Up 2 Shape Up because when you do, you have way more fun. I promise.

 

The morning of the race, the paparazzi just wouldn't stop following me (wink wink)

But I didn't mind since I loved what I was wearing and felt stronger and more prepared than ever to run an amazing race. The start line was in Central Park with a finish in downtown Manhattan's South Street Seaport.

 

In my video, I talk a lot. Here's the quickie version of what I wore and why:

  • Lorna Jane Sky Singlet & Run Short - Both pieces are comfortable, non-chafing, quick drying and stylish. I especially love the sheerness and silvery fabric of the Sky Singlet.
  • Nike Compression Sports Bra - A great choice for small chest sizes (A-C) and since mine is invisible I added padded inserts. A girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do...y'know?
  • Nike LunarEclipse+ 2 Running Shoes - It has mid-level cushioning, it's made for long distance running and I love the design. In my vid, I admit to only having a week's worth of wear out of these those. I definitely recommend wearing your new sneaks for 2-weeks before running a long race. But in my case, it was a risk I was willing to take.
  • American Apparel Long Leg Warmers - They're fun and they kept my legs warm without the need for full coverage. I had planned on removing them 20 minutes into my run but I ended up needing them because it was cold near the Hudson River.
  • Asics Media Armband - It holds everything I need including my iPhone, ID, keys and random things I decide I need at the last minute. My specific armband doesn't seem to be available any longer but that's OK because it's not very stylish. Find the new designs HERE or check out other brands.
  • Yurbuds Earphones - These are the best working and best feeling sport earphones I've found. I have the basic Inspire style but all Yurbuds are sweat proof and durable.

Test out apparel and gear before race day

This is just common sense. Uncomfortable surprises really suck especially when you have 10 miles to go! One time in band camp...I wore a horribly uncomfortable pair of workout panties and let's just say I couldn't wait to get home. I burned them...that's all you need to know.

No matter what you wear, make sure to get as much sleep as you can the 3 nights before your race. You probably won't sleep much the night before but that's normal. Adrenaline will keep you going just expect to crash hard once your head hits your pillow.

This 21 minute video could have been 60 seconds. Real runners don't wear Nike running shoes. Cute singlet but this would look even better w/ a hot rack

Jake.... I couldn't agree more... I mean Um.. like i was Um like totally gonna Um fall asleep while I like Um.. lol.. k i'm done.. just had to get that out.. seriously was gonna slit my wrist listening to her go on and ON. Bravo to you for getting through the entire 21 minutes cause I was more then over it after about Um 5 minutes.

Oh my god, guys-u seriously need to lay off. This girl seems super sweet and u r just ripping her a new one 4 no reason. Stop being haters cuz I thought her tips were super helpful. And FYI Jake I also run in Nikes and there wicked. Im on ur side mizzfit

I'm sorry you were disappointed. I have no problem with you NOT watching the video. It is always your choice not to watch. Not sure how I don't qualify as a REAL runner...I've probably run a lot more marathons and races than you have. No offense or anything but running is my passion and I don't let shoes label or quantify what I love to do. But I do happen to love Nike and know a lot of pro athletes that run in their sneaks. And for the record, I like my small boobs. If you want to see bigger ones than I suggest another website but you're welcome back here anytime.

Did you get hot in those leg warmers? I usually over heat in races & would not want to peel them off cuz it would effect my time. R u super competitive or race more for fun?

Hi CJ!

Y'know, I thought I was going to get hot in my leg warmers after about 15-20 minutes but I did not. They were super comfortable and they never slipped. I would've been too hot in pants but too cold had I gotten rid of the leg warmers. So it was perfect! I even stopped to take them off after 20 min but then decided against it since they weren't a bother. I used to be more competitive with running but now I run at my own pace...however I always push myself and I'm definitely not slow. Please tell me more about YOU!

I LOVE the singlet and would really like to try one out myself. Everyone at the office is talking about it right now actually, because it looks so cute and comfy on you! As for the comment about Nikes . . . that's a little odd because Nike's business is athletic gear. Lots of real runners wear Nikes. I don't because I have another brand I love, but as a runner I certainly would be open to it in the future. I own American Apparel legwarmers too - mine are neon pink! And I'm with you on the Miracle Skin Transformer love - did you end up using the body one? LOVE IT (And I'm not just saying that because it's part of our company!)

Well, if you're competitive it's not entirely a bad thing!!! I'm just at a point in my life where I enjoy the process more than the finish time. I think that if you have the competitive spirit in you, that you should GO WITH IT and RACE YOUR HEART OUT! Isn't the singlet beyond cute??? I'm a big fan. It was the comfy-est run top that I've ever worn. The Nike comments were silly. But whatever, let haters hate. That's what they're good at. We should wear our leg warmers together to Refine Method but I know they'll be off before the jumping jacks start, lol! And yes, I'm super in love with the Miracle Skin Transformer. Thank you for introducing me to it! I now travel with it everywhere! Love that it has SPF. Thanks for stopping by, babe!

So this has definitely inspired me to go buy more stuff... no really. I'd love to do some sort of running. Granted there are certain things I have to deal with before I can do that, mainly diagnosing the knee problems I've been dealing with for awhile, but at least when I am able to I'll have a great idea of what to wear :) or at least look hot walking ;) Definitely loving that skin transformer lotions and when I have money am going to get it :) I love your um videos ;)

I think you are absolutely adorable and love you and your site! People are disgusting and should keep negativity to themselves, although all are entitled to their opinion - but the hating should be kept to oneself! I was at SLT on Sunday, not Monday. But let’s plan to workout together this week or weekend there. I also take SLT Yoga if you do that too. Thank you for defending me. But honestly, I am used to both hater-ation and celebration of what I do. I just try and ignore the haters because the celebrators of fitness fashion make up for it wink And I HAVE NOT TAWKEN MY JACKET OFF! My boyfriend made fun of me for wearing it everyday since he gave it to me. Maybe I need a break but will make sure to wear the day I see you at SLT!
