A luxurious yoga playground for people who are intrigued by yoga (and just getting started) and for people who are lifelong fans (and crave more variety than a small studio can offer). Pure Yoga West offers over 20 styles of yoga under one roof. It’s a large club (20,000 sq feet) but doesn’t feel like one. The decor is a mix of traditional Indian aesthetics and contemporary minimalism. The studios and locker rooms are spacious, modern and tranquil. The instructors have a high level of experience and the weekly class schedule is eclectic. Yoga related events and workshops are always going on and it’s a great place to meet people. Members are conversational and never seem to be in a rush to leave. Plush lounge areas may have something to do with that! Pure Yoga is an Equinox partner with comparable membership pricing.

This gym has it all…I mean, REALLY HAS IT ALL. Located in the upper 60’s of mid-town west, you’ll find 6 levels of pure fitness with top-of-the-line everything and the best instructors in NYC to show you how to work it, tone it, and come back for more. My favorite parts of this gym are the outdoor running track, the rock climbing wall, the top-floor boxing studio and the indoor basketball courts. The cafe isn’t too shabby either and you never know who you’ll see there. There’s even a salon and a boutique that carries Body Rock fitness apparel. If you have the dough and like a big high-end gym, this one’s for you. Check out the following link for a 3 day all-access pass: http://www.mpsportsclub.com/campaigns/2010/search/NY/

Vibration training studio with Power Plate machinery for group classes and individual use. Studio is located in the heart of NYC’s Meatpacking District and has an airy, minimalist decor and a tranquil vibe. Feels exclusive and never like a packed, annoying gym. There’s a small rotation of instructors (including one of the owners) who know all their clients by first name. The locker rooms and saunas are small but totally adorable. Cellulite reduction services also offered on site.

I love Physique57 but it doesn’t hold a candle to Bar Method SOHO’s interior decor and cleanliness. The staff is beyond nice and the owners (Kristin & Amy) literally welcome you into class like you’re family. No need to bring a lock because each locker has its own key that you take with you to class. Bar Method classes combine dance conditioning and interval training using light dumbbells, foam props and, of course, the ballet bar. $35/single class, $250 for 30-day unlimited package (for new clients).

Just a stroll away from Union Square, Yoga Vida NYC is a cozy studio with a full schedule of vinyasa flow classes and special workshops. Everything takes place in their master yoga studio which is large and fully windowed. You’ll hear city noise drift through the room but that’s just part of the experience as you’ll learn to zone it all out and focus on your practice. Expect extra warm customer service here, from the front desk to your instructor. The friendliness factor and affordable drop-in rate ($10/class) really impressed me. Recommended class teachers: Ilaria and Jai.
