If you watched Pink’s aerial acrobatics performance at the 2010 Grammy Awards in amazement, you’ll love this class! The best part is that it’s not as hard as it looks. Slow, strength building moves guarantee a great physical and mental workout. Equipment used includes silks, trapeze and rope. Wear a fitted top and leggings, and bring your bare feet. Classes are $60 for single sessions and $55/class for a package of 5 or more.

BarWorks combines ballet barre fitness with stretching & stability yoga poses like downward dog, plank and lunge twists. Barre fitness classes are everywhere these days but BarWorks does a beautiful job of preserving the pace, inner focus and zen nature of yoga, more so than the rest. The barres are detachable and everyone in class gets their own. You’ll even use the barre as a free weight to work your arms. You won’t leave this class dripping sweat but you’ll walk out tighter than you walked in.

FlyBarre is a barre-fitness class offered at Flywheel Sports, a spinning studio. But don’t let it scare you off if you’re not into spinning, because this class is awesome and very different from classes at more established nyc barre studios. You’ll strength train for longer using hand weights ranging from 1-5 pounds. Considering the non-stop flow of class, lower is better. Exercises using both the barre and floor focus on a range of motion as opposed to small target areas. It’s a full hour of what I like to call “barre bootcamp” and comes as a cheaper session rate of $30 (compared to Bar Method and Physique57) and includes free water.

Kickboxing classes are small, non-intimidating and can be purchased as single sessions. Your instructor will most likely have a Muay Thai training background. No prior kickboxing experience is necessary. If you’re a beginner, you’ll get a rundown on fighting stance, strikes, kicks and blocks before entering the ring. You’ll work your whole body—from your elbows down to the balls of your feet—to burn fat, strengthen your core, and increase your endurance and flexibility. Handwraps and boxing gloves are supplied but unless you enjoy using equipment drenched in someone else’s sweat, bring your own!

Whole body vibration training on a bizarre but very useful Power Plate machine. Classes are small, topping off at 6 people. Everyone mounts their own Power Plate and strength trains at 45 second intervals of vibration (which can be adjusted for a range of intensity). It’s fun, low impact and beats the monotony of traditional workout machines. The 30 minute workout promises to burn fat and enhance muscle tone. I’d bank on the latter. $35/single session, promotional/super packages also available.

This is a signature Yogaworks class designed for a more advanced yoga student. Breath and movement through alignment are the main focus. There’s no music…just a lot of articulate instruction from yogi Julie Marx who encourages you to visualize longer and straighter limbs and growing taller in each position. Julie is a serious instructor—so don’t expect her to crack jokes. A great class for yoga students looking for more instruction and supervision.

A dynamic fusion class and mind-body experience that mixes traditional yoga poses with strength training intervals. Created by fitness pro, Maryanne Blake, this workout will definitely clear your head and flush your worries away. You have to pay attention because it’s unlike any fitness class you’ve ever taken! Athletic and restless types will love this workout because your body is moving at all times. Even slower movements engage multiple joints and require focus and balance. Plus, you’re not on the mat the whole time and there’s plenty of core work involved. You can even add light weights for more of a challenge.
