RESIST 2 TONE

Resistance training that uses elastic tension for muscle contraction will tone your body inside and out. Internally, it strengthens your heart and improves blood flow to your brain. Research studies at the Brain Research Center at the University of British Columbia have linked resistance training to the creation of new brain cells, which means adding resistance to your workout can make you smarter! On the outside, resistance training will make your body lean and muscular without the bulk. Now that you know what it does, let's talk about how you can get started.

WHAT YOU NEED: STRETCHY TOOLS

My favorite kind of resistance training is performed with elastic bands or rubber tubing which vary in style and tension strength. I like them because they're a nice break from dumbbells which can easily bulk you up. Bands and tubing create an elastic force that your muscles work against to push, pull, squeeze, stretch or bend. It's an entirely different sensation than working with dumbbells and can be just as hard or harder depending on the exercise. Don't underestimate these stretchy tools just because they don't have hard edges!

Here are some more advantages to working with bands and tubing:

  • They're relatively inexpensive.
  • You can do lots of exercises with them and even wrap them around columns or rails for added tension. Some also come with door attachments.
  • They're lightweight and portable.
  • You can combine them with weights to make strength training exercises harder.
  • They don't take up much storage space and they don't cause harm (like broken toes) if you lose your grip.

One of my favorites is the SPRI Ultra Toner (with soft handles) which can be used for single arm and double arm exercises for upper body conditioning. The SPRI Ultra Toner Exercise Guide will help get you started. Once you master the basics, get creative and make up your own.

HOW TO GET STARTED: TRY THESE RESISTANCE DVD'S

Marisa Tomei: Core & Curves ($14.98)

I adore Marisa Tomei and I've got mad love for trainer Key Son. Key designed the Core & Curves workout which incorporates resistance training exercise. He might kill me for singing his praises here (he's a very modest guy) but I have to rave because Core & Curves is well-done for a 20-minute results-oriented workout. Sometimes that's all you need but you still have to work hard from one minute to the next! Key works almost exclusively with models and actresses, prepping them for runway shows, commercial campaigns and film. He keeps his clients nicely toned and lean...just ask Hilary Swank. Core & Curves will help you achieve Key's signature lean physique. You'll use the Gaiam Toning Band pictured below for speed and agility exercises. It comes with the dvd...just follow Marisa's lead!

Jane Fonda Workout with Minibands feat. Tone It Up ($14.99)

The Jane Fonda Workout with Minibands may sound like it's from the 80's but it's actually a new release. The dvd features the Tone It Up girls a.k.a Team Fonda guiding you through a resistance training workout using minibands for lower body for strength. Prepare for leaner hips, legs and glutes! This dvd package includes 3 minibands (light, med, heavy) and a laminated flip book with additional instruction from the Tone It Up girls. With Jane Fonda's stamp on the dvd, what more do you need?

WHAT TO WEAR: BODY TONING FITNESS APPAREL
Style up 2 Shape Up for resistance training with fitness clothes with built-in resistance. FILA's Body Toning System collection is designed to give your body a workout while you're working out. It sounds complicated but it's really quite simple. The Body Toning System is performance-enhancing activewear built with 4-way stretch and compression. BTS fabric is thick with a little give, and when worn tight can activate your muscles to work harder. The fabric compression also increases blood circulation which can boost your workout endurance. How amazing is that?
I'm a big fan because in addition to helping you tone, FILA's Body Toning System is slimming and smooths you out by keeping it all in. Sophie Monk, Star Jones, Cheryl Burke and Lo Bosworth are also BTS fans. The collection includes a tank, short, pant, capris and a long tight which can be worn for any kind of workout. Even if you're not resistance training, you will be once you're wearing BTS apparel. I wore my Toning Resistance tank and pant to yoga class one day and boy was that a killer practice! I was actually sore the next day. For best toning results with the BTS collection, go with a tight fit. Don't be scared to go down a size (remember, there's a slimming effect). If you live in NYC, shop the BTS collection in-store at Paragon Sports.

Between FILA's BTS collection and Sh?ToBu tights, you can literally RESIST 2 TONE all day long!

I am so wanting the entire Fila collection as I hear women are raving about the fit, quality, and how good their glutes look in the pants...and who doesn't want that?

JEn February 23rd, 2011 2:03AM

I want to try the FILA line so bad!

meg February 23rd, 2011 2:47AM

I hadn't heard of Fila's resistance collection until your article here. I am so curious to see/feel how they work. Anything that can give my workput a little extra boost! I use resistance bands all the time in my Pilates mat classes and personal practice. Size small.

MizzFIT February 23rd, 2011 6:10AM

Great quality. Great fit. Harder working glutes! I think everyone wants that. What size are you?

MizzFIT February 23rd, 2011 6:11AM

Hi Jen,

What kind of workout would you wear FILA's BTS collection for and what size are you?

MizzFIT February 23rd, 2011 6:12AM

Pilates is def a great resistance-integrating workout. I need to get back into it. I think my love for yoga kind of pushed Pilates out of my life...so thanks for reminding me to go back to it! You're now entered for the giveaway! Thanks for commenting.

Not only do I love the way the fila body toning system gives my now non-existant booty a shape...but somehow the wearing the resistance gear blocks out some of the horrible back/leg pain I have had since I was injured last summer. Since I finally can do a little exercise again (thank god!), I would wear these all over the gym, especially the weight room ;)....I am a size small...thanks!!@!# :)

MizzFIT February 23rd, 2011 7:18AM

Hi Jilly,

Work that booty! I bet it's a cute one! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the FILA's BTS collection and you're now entered for the giveaway. Have a great day!

Do you dig FILA's Body Toning System or not and why?
WHAT IS THERE NOT TO LIKE? IT SOUNDS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE..
If you dig it, tell me how you'd wear it, specify a workout.
I'D WEAR IT AS AN INSTRUCTOR AT MY CORE CLASS, IT WOULD MAKE ME GIVE A 110% TO MY CLASS.
and your size (S,M,L) HOPEFULLY A MEDIUM.

MizzFIT February 24th, 2011 8:35AM

Hey girl!

So good to hear from you and yes, you'd love the Fila BTS collection! So I'm glad that you've entered the giveaway! I hope all is well with you in Norway and I send you lots of love! Please keep me posted on trends coming out of Norway too.

After reading what you have to say about the FILA system - I'm dying to try it! Hope you're nicely compensated LOL

I def want to try it so I hope I win!!! I'm a size s :D

MizzFIT February 24th, 2011 10:43AM

Hi Lizz,

What do you mean by "hope you're nicely compensated"? FILA did not pay me to write this blog article. I've worn the BTS collection for some time now and love it. Because of my passion for this collection, I asked FILA to join the giveaway. I believe it's very kind of them to give away fitness outfits worth over $100 to 3 of my readers.

So...no, I'm not being compensated to write about them. On the other hand if you purchase anything from my affiliate links, I may receive a small commission which doesn't exactly cover my rent.

What I'm trying to say is that I love this collection and I would not write about it if I didn't. I think you would enjoy it too once you experience the benefits for yourself. You're officially entered for the giveaway. Good luck!

Sharon February 24th, 2011 4:59PM

Never tried any toning clothes because even though I'm in good shape and workout regularly I get kinda self conscious about wearing tight clothes, but those pants look awesome and perfect for pilates mat/mediation/stretch/any yoga. I'm a M!

MizzFIT February 24th, 2011 6:00PM

Hi Sharon!

Great seeing you at the Luxury lounge event last week! FILA's BTS collection is not as tight as you think it is. But it's definitely more snug than a loose tank and yoga pant. You're good for the giveaway and thanks for leaving a comment. Also, you're in phenomenal shape. It's very inspiring. Take care, Mizz

Jenna Z February 25th, 2011 7:01AM

I dig it in as much as it looks like stylish workout gear. But I NOT buy into it being "performance-enhancing" and "body toning". All these toning products are such gimmicks. Put in the hours and you'll see results!

MizzFIT February 25th, 2011 8:48AM

Hi Jenna,

I agree with the point you make. You HAVE to put in the hours. You can't just wear the clothes and expect to see results--impossible! The clothes doesn't change your body for you but it does create resistance for you to work a bit harder while you're working out. I can see how the "body toning" label could be misleading though. Are you interested in the giveaway? If so, what size are you?

Karin February 26th, 2011 3:25PM

Definitely dig the Fila. In fact, I wore the capris this afternoon in led ashtanga class. They were comfortable but not binding, and seemed to wick the sweat away. Size small suits me fine.

MizzFIT February 27th, 2011 7:39AM

Hi Karin!

So you're already a BTS user! Fantastic! I love the capris. How do you feel that they affected your workout? You're good for the giveaway and thanks for leaving a comment.

Aww thank you! So are you but obvi that goes without saying:)

JOANNA LANG February 28th, 2011 2:06PM

I am always looking for a way to work harder! Sadly I have hip dysplasia so I had to stop running, which had been a lifeline of mine, but it actually only got me to try all sorts of new things and ways to challenge my body, from the elliptical, MMA, HIIT, and barre classes (my new obsession!) and now I'm in a million times better shape than before! (Although sometimes I still can't find the need to go for a short 5k...just don't tell my doctor)

Anyways, I would wear the BTS collection when I was using the elliptical, weights, and definitely when I was doing barre workouts because the extra will help me go the extra mile and get ready for the summer!

JOANNA LANG February 28th, 2011 2:08PM

Also it looks like I forgot to put my size which is a S

Thanks!

Karin February 28th, 2011 2:56PM

Hi MizzFit. While doing yoga, the gentle compression of the capris subtly reminds me to pull up my thighs and mind my mulabanda. Maybe in that respect they are contributing to my calorie burn.
(Can't wait to check out PURE this week!)

MizzFIT February 28th, 2011 4:14PM

Hi Joanna,

I won't tell your doctor! Sounds like you would put BTS workout clothes to lots of use...I like to hear that. Thanks for sharing your story and you're entered for the giveaway. Take care of your hips and try yoga (if you're able to). Thx!

MizzFIT

MizzFIT February 28th, 2011 4:18PM

Love Pure! Glad to know the BTS are serving you well. Minding the mulabanda is so important to yoga practice...I love that the BTS collection can remind you to do that. I must admit, I often forget to! Thanks again for your nice replies.

Jennie March 2nd, 2011 4:24PM

I'd never seen these before, so I decided to check them out at Paragon. It looks like they are quite popular since they did not have my size. I love the style of them, and I'm definitely curious to try out the toning system in one of my favorite yoga classes called gravity surfing! I am a size small. Thanks!

MizzFIT March 3rd, 2011 8:53AM

Hi Jennie!

Ooooooh gravity surfing!!! Where do you take that class? Do tell! Yes, this line is really doing well and has become quite popular. But maybe you'll win the giveaway...you never know! You're officially entered and thanks a million for sharing your thoughts.

Jennie March 4th, 2011 3:56AM

Hey Mizzfit! It's a cardio yoga class with inversions that I take at David Barton gym.

MizzFIT March 4th, 2011 4:56AM

Hi Jennie,

Which location? I'm going to have to check it out!
THANKS!

Jennie March 4th, 2011 5:28AM

I go to the Astor Place location on Friday eve. Let me know if you plan on going!

MizzFIT March 4th, 2011 11:29AM

Are you going this Friday? I'll totally join you tomorrow if so. Just need to call it in. Let me know!

Frydel March 5th, 2011 5:48AM
