By far, the most exciting and rewarding aspect for me is the opportunity to reach millions of people with practical and manageable health messages…in a matter of minutes. And having coffee in the greenroom with George Clooney and Lady Gaga is pretty darn cool, too!
Slimdown is designed for beginner and intermediate exercisers. Best of all, it’s easy to catch on and jump right in, so you don’t have to feel overwhelmed about starting a new fitness routine.
While I was studying kinesiology during my undergrad years at University of Maryland, I taught aerobics and other exercise classes all over town. I then went to graduate school at NYU for nutrition, and continued to teach classes at every trendy sports club in Manhattan. At the same time, I got my personal training certifications and started doing one-on-one coaching sessions in people’s homes—all of this helped pay the bills while I earned my nutrition degree.
Aside from my daily walk, I make sure to do 20 minutes of strength training 2-3 times each week. My two daughters (and my sister Debra, who lives down the block) get a kick out of doing my Slimdown DVD with me, so that’s become pretty popular on the weekends! We have a great time and of course they love to make fun of me!
I’m a crime show junkie! I love crashing on the couch and watching reruns of Law and Order or Criminal Minds with my kids.
I never imagined so many people would be watching over what I order at restaurants or put in my grocery cart!
A typical breakfast for me is a nonfat Greek yogurt sprinkled with almonds and a banana. For lunch, I might have a huge salad with the works…tomatoes, onions, carrots, mushrooms, broccoli, peppers, grilled chicken, chickpeas, egg whites, and anything else I’m in the mood for.
I’m all for anyone who wants to help people get healthy, and I think it’s terrific that so many people have jumped on the health bandwagon. My advice to them: credibility is KEY, so make sure the information you’re delivering to your audience is reliable and well-researched.
I love Barry’s Bootcamp classes—they’re trendy, super-fun, and give me the workout of my life! I’m also thrilled that mainstream food companies are experimenting with healthier snacks and adding cool ingredients like quinoa, amaranth and other interesting whole grains; chia seeds; and dark chocolate.
At the moment, I’m loving my Adidas ClimaCool sneakers. For workout wear, I like Arc'teryx and Splits 59—fashionable, comfortable, and functional all in one.
My dad, Artie Schloss. He started running full marathons at age 50 and he's won multiple gold medals in the senior Olympics. Today, he’s in his early 70s and clearly one of the fittest guys I know.
