nyc gym

Is a personal trainer worth it? My experience at NYSC.

Back in the day when you joined a gym, they'd throw in a few personal training sessions with your new membership. It was supposed to wet your appetite for personal training and help you ease into your new gym-life. Every trainer I got was just going through the motions, fully knowing I'd disappear on him or her once my free sessions were up. It was quite the self-fulfilling prophecy. I disappeared. But who wants to invest in personal training when your trainer doesn't give a damn? And can you blame them for not caring when they know new members are taking them for joyride? The world of fitness has changed a lot since those days, and so have gym-goers. People are investing more of their paycheck in health & wellness, and seem to be more committed to their workouts than ever. A few years ago The New York Times reported that some women were studio-hopping, taking more than 1 class a day to get their fix. Wow! Now that's a passion for fitness! It's the kind of enthusiasm...

Work Out With Me At Exceed NYC FREE!

I've teamed up with Exceed Physical Culture to offer a FREE WORKOUT at their newest studio in Tribeca, NYC. The reason I'm doing this is because after doing 2 workouts at Exceed earlier this year, I was like "this is so hard, I can't come back by myself...I need my fit crew!" So I'm calling all of you out of the woodwork to come help me sweat before Christmas and the New Year. I miss my New Balance Girls' Night Out events so much and it's hard not to see all of your amazing faces and physiques every month. So this is a way for us to get together yet again in NYC and to experience one of my new favorite high intensity interval training studios in a quaint part of Manhattan. There will be gift bags, water and towels for you so just bring your game face and stylish activewear. I'm also proposing we grab a bite to eat afterwards (if you have time) somewhere in the neighborhood that's fast/healthy. I will have that info for you closer to the day of the event. This is a...

Indoor Running Classes, Studio Style!

Do you love to run? Sad your marathon training is over? Maybe it's too cold where you live to even contemplate a jog outside? But solitary treadmills ain't your thang? Well, then, you're going to LOVE this trend hitting the nation. You already know running is popular. Duh. But the craziness of the sport is that 5K's, half marathons, full marathons and even fun runs have doubled if not tripled in registration rates over the last 5 years. You had to know it was comin: studio style running classes! (image: Mile High Run Club's Woodway Treadmills) Mile High Run Club just opened in New York City 2 weeks ago. Along with it, a number of other boutique fitness studios are promoting running classes. There's Shred415 (which is a lot like Barry's but anyone who goes--like me--will tell you it's more about the running than the lifting). Equinox gyms also launched a group running class called Precision Running across it's nationwide locations. Running wasn't invented yesterday...

A New Way To Think About Social Workouts

When you hear the words "social workout" you probably think "group fitness". But I'm going to make you think something entirely different by the time you finish reading this article. Social workouts are on the rise and extremely popular among women. They go beyond group fitness. They are experiential events where people actually socialize, network, exchange goods/information and get inspired. In many cases, the workout is only a small part of the bigger social workout picture. Why is this important? Because women are redefining what it means to live a healthy lifestyle. A happy, healthy life is a balancing act of exercise, work, love, family, friendship, passion, inspiration, travel, food, drink and a million other things. Even shopping! So why not bring these things together especially when it comes to fitness? The Girls' Night Out New Balance (NBGNO) events that I host in New York City aim to ahieve this...and I think we do a pretty good job! NBGNO events...
