Did you make some New Year's resolutions but are finding yourself already flaking on them a few weeks into 2014? I have a NEW approach for you: Use MUSIC to make sure you hit all your 2014 goals. Create theme songs (on your iPhone/mp3 player) that will keep your goals “singing” in your ears so that you’ll be reminded and revved up for all the great changes you’re ready to make.
Maybe some of you are old enough to remember the "dancing baby" episode from the hit tv show Ally McBeal? Because that's basically what I'm talking about!
As both the music fitness editor of Mizzfit.com and New York City high school teacher, I constantly have to motivate my readers (you guys!) and my students. I like to go all out (as you can see below).
Music can help you realize your dreams and goals. All you have to do is find your theme song, turn it up and then turn on new set of opportunities.
It’s important for you to have a theme song for all the goal-oriented scenarios in your life. So you’re definitely going to want to have more than one! This is where it gets fun! I came up with the top 4 common goals we make for the new year, every year, and have tied in some music suggestions to keep you on track!
You can do all this by finding meaningful theme songs that you put on your iPhone or iPod to help you commit to these goals and give you the lyrics to literally help you see them through in 2014.
Check out these examples!
1) READY FOR LOVE THEME SONG: Are you single and determined to start dating again and find that special someone?
To get yourself back on the dating circuit and feeling great about it, a theme song is really important and will help you tap into your most positive and radiant you.
For example: “Marry the Night” by Lady Gaga sets the tone for me that I’m hot and a force to be reckoned with on a blind date.
This remix of Hold On We're Coming Home by Drake is awesome but maybe save it for a few dates into your burgeoning romance.
2) READY FOR A NEW GIG THEME SONG: Do you want to make a career change or have a big job interview coming up?
It is obviously important to find the perfect suit and master why you are the ideal candidate for the job. But you also should find your interview theme song that will give you the confidence and swagger to nail that interview.
“Don’t Stop Believin’” by Journey and "Fly" by Nicki Minaj are my two faves.
3) READY FOR YOUR DREAM BOD THEME SONG: Are you ready to sculpt your dream body instead of just talking about it?
Listen, we always say we’re going to hit the gym at the beginning of the year but then our commitment fades. To really stay in the game and see results, it’s in the music and has to be top of mind.
Here’s what on repeat on my workout theme song playlist:
- This awesome remix of “Burn” by Ellie Goulding (who’s an avid runner herself!)
- "You Make Me" by Aviici
- This killer REMIX from Revolve Master Instructor & DJ Christianne Phillips
4) READY TO SAY BYE BYE TO DRAMA THEME SONG: Are you ready to leave the past (a.k.a. drama) where it belongs in 2013?
Was it a breakup, fight with a friend, family drama? Whatever got you down isn’t doing you any favors—we’re getting rid of it with motivational music.
My go-to theme song is "On To The Next One" by Jay-Z. It's an ode to moving forward and it just make me feel tough and ready to take on the world.
OVERALL BENEFIT OF USING THEME SONGS
I teach Juniors in high school and every year on the first day of school, I have my students identify their goals for my class for the year. I ask them: What’s your theme song going to be? I find that it really helps them create a positive outlook for the year in a fun way that they can refer back to and even use to study.
It’s an exercise that works for everyone…not just high school students! It’s the power of positive thinking through music and it’s really easy to do to get yourself pumped up for the New Year!
