It's the new boutique fitness studio in New York City that has everyone talking, where Taylor Swift and models Kate Upton and Karlie Kloss drop in to break a sweat. I’m all about outdoor workouts but lately it’s been TOO COLD. Check out my favorite winter workout that lets you skip the cold and will instantly heat up your muscles. It’s Pilates but a different kind of Pilates approach than you’re used to seeing at the gym. The workout is called Flex Pilates and it's taught at Flex Studios in New York City. Flex Pilates uses the Pilates reformer to combine classic Pilates and strength training for 55 minutes that don’t go by too quickly (sorry, clock watchers). Let’s just say you feel every minute of this workout because the motions are often pace-controlled and require you to activate your core while pulling it up and in. Some moves happen slowly and some quick depending on how you’re using the reformer. To show you several of my favorite moves, I asked Jenn Seracuse, director and instructor at Flex Studios, to guide me through a session. I've teamed up with Exceed Physical Culture to offer a FREE WORKOUT at their newest studio in Tribeca, NYC. The reason I'm doing this is because after doing 2 workouts at Exceed earlier this year, I was like "this is so hard, I can't come back by myself...I need my fit crew!" When you hear the words "social workout" you probably think "group fitness". But I'm going to make you think something entirely different by the time you finish reading this article. Social workouts are on the rise and extremely popular among women. They go beyond group fitness. They are experiential events where people actually socialize, network, exchange goods/information and get inspired. In many cases, the workout is only a small part of the bigger social workout picture. Why is this important? Because women are redefining what it means to live a healthy lifestyle. A happy, healthy life is a balancing act of exercise, work, love, family, friendship, passion, inspiration, travel, food, drink and a million other things. Even shopping! A lot changes as you get older. But mostly, you become a creature of habit. You get comfortable doing the same things because you've had good results from them in the past. Ha! Old people are craaaaaazy! It's OK, I can say that because according to most 20-year olds I am ancient. And frankly, I don't care how old you are but we need to put an end to this antiquated way of thinking. Let's take ME for example (it is my website afterall). I am in my 30's and my complacency usally results in one of two things: 1) tubby or 2) chubby. Last summer I had a 4-pack (abs not beer). A year later I have a no-pack. WTF! Okay...so maybe my bewilderment isn't 100% genuine. I just came down with a case of "old-person" thinking. I got too comfortable with my barre, yoga and running routine.
