Running Safety: What Every Runner Should Know And Do

This topic is an important one, especially in light of the deaths of Karina Vetrano and Vanessa Marcotte, which both really affected me as an avid outdoor runner. Karina's death was just too close to home. Her body was found along a Howard Beach path she ran down often. And finally, just a few days ago, her murderer/rapist was caught and charged. Vanessa Marcotte's death, while it didn't happen in New York City proper (her body was found in Massachusetts where she was jogging while visting her mother), was still a major reality check for me because she worked at Google, a mere block away from where I used to live here in NYC. For months, every time I walked past the Google building, all I could think about was her untimely death. What a tragedy in both cases. These attacks from 2016 prove that we need to be a lot more cautious than ever. If you're a runner, be safe out there, but also keep an eye out for your fellow brother and sister runners too. We need to look out for each...

TomTom Spark is Music to My Ears

This is my new TomTom Spark Cardio + Music and GPS fitness watch. I know you’ve probably heard of many fitness trackers already but this one is the tracker of all trackers. I literally just went bonkers on a plane over it...but let me work my way into that story. I’m arguably one of the toughest critics of fitness watches and trackers. Most of the ones I’ve purchased or have been sent to review bite the dust in my gadget drawer at Mizzfit Headquarters. For the most part I find them to be unnecessary time suckers. I already have enough gadgets and gizmos in my life that if I'm going to add something to the mix, it better do something spectacular. I want it to improve my fitness routine and make it more fun, not complicated. To be perfectly honest, the TomTom Spark Cardio + Music frustrated me at first because there’s a bit of set up involved. You have to sync it to your computer, enter a bunch of personal info so that it can compute your stats, get the app on your...

Rise and Shine on my #WhereToNow Road Trip

The first step out of bed is the hardest step you’ll take all day. Along with Tri-State Ford, I’m going to show you how every step afterwards can lead you to an exciting adventure. I’m doing it all in a 2015 Ford Escape to celebrate Tri-State Ford’s “Where To Now?” adventure and sweepstakes! Here are 5 tips that help me conquer the day every morning: Plan and prepare your breakfast the night before. It’s the most important meal you’ll have all day. I prep and freeze fruit for my smoothies the night before or I’ll soak chia seeds in almond milk for a yummy chia pudding breakfast. Make sure you’re fully stocked with all fixings for coffee or tea. I can’t start my day without it! Commit to an early morning workout by signing up for a class at a local studio. Or better yet, make a fit date with a friend. You’re less likely to skip fitness when you’re financially invested and have someone holding you accountable. Lay out active...

Half Marathon Training Tips - Prep With Me!

I recently ran the More/Fitness/Shape Magazine Women's Half Marathon in New York City and couldn't be more pleased with the quality of my run. So many factors go into having a great run. Of course, you have to train consistently, eat right and get plenty of sleep and hydration. But there are other things you learn through trial & error to help improve your run. I've been running long distances since highschool and to this day I'm still discovering new tricks for a smoother run. Here are 5 Tips that helped me excel in my recent half marathon (and make me want to attempt another...even though I swore it'd be my last one at mile 10...so typical!). 1. Test everything you plan on wearing for the official half marathon race day during your last few training runs. From your clothes to accessories and gadgets, don't take a risk by wearing it for the first time on race day! Make sure to give it a test run so that you know it feels comfortable on your body and that it works the...

Indoor Running Classes, Studio Style!

Do you love to run? Sad your marathon training is over? Maybe it's too cold where you live to even contemplate a jog outside? But solitary treadmills ain't your thang? Well, then, you're going to LOVE this trend hitting the nation. You already know running is popular. Duh. But the craziness of the sport is that 5K's, half marathons, full marathons and even fun runs have doubled if not tripled in registration rates over the last 5 years. You had to know it was comin: studio style running classes! (image: Mile High Run Club's Woodway Treadmills) Mile High Run Club just opened in New York City 2 weeks ago. Along with it, a number of other boutique fitness studios are promoting running classes. There's Shred415 (which is a lot like Barry's but anyone who goes--like me--will tell you it's more about the running than the lifting). Equinox gyms also launched a group running class called Precision Running across it's nationwide locations. Running wasn't invented yesterday...

More NBGNO Events in USA!

I love when good things never die! I'm happy to report that Girls' Night Out events (#NBGNO) will continue to pop up across the country and eventually circle back to New York City in September. The next one is in Santa Monica on Wednesday, August 27th at 6.30pm at the NB Store on 2600 Wilshire Boulevard. Hosting the Girls' Night Out campaign for New Balance was one of the highlights of my summer. I got to work out and connect with so many amazing women who believe in the benefits of social fitness. What I loved most is that these women weren't competitive, mean, selfish or jealous. They were a bonded, smiling-laughing group. It was so refreshing to experience. I have to be candid and say that last night I went to an unrelated fitness event I was invited to in New York City, and there were several fitness bloggers in attendance who were very unfriendly (wouldn't say hello or shake hands) and no one socialized. When I attempted to introduce myself to strike up a...
