You don’t really know your mom until she loses her mom. I learned this last summer as we struggled through not being able to attend my grandmother’s funeral in Honduras. I was in New York when it happened, while the rest of my immediate family was in St. Louis together. A few weeks later, as soon as I could, I went to visit and spend some time with my mom. She cried, recounted memories, and claimed she'd been prepared for it as my Grandma's health had been rapidly declining.
Today I went to my SoulCycle "Outdoors" spin class here in NYC's Hudson Yards Plaza and the instructor leading the class said to everyone "2020 is over...it's DONE." I get why she said this. We all do, right? But as I was pedaling away I began to think about the last few months and how 'parts of 2020 weren't so bad'. Yes, 2020 (post-February and about a week or so into March) required lots of quarantining and social distancing, but it also required a lot of work to reach out and reconnect with friends and family.
I made this abstract video diary to preserve the moment I was experiencing while standing in the Hudson Yards Plaza during a worldwide pandemic. The Hudson Yards Plaza is the home to a structure called The Vessel. This is a spot in Manhattan that quickly became a high traffic area upon it's historic opening day. It also happens to be a place I spend a lot of time because it's in my neighborhood, about one walking block from where I live.
Full disclosure: I don't love wearing a face mask but I do it for your safety and for mine during the world's COVID-19 crisis. I don't think anyone enjoys wearing a mask! But this is our present reality. The first protective face mask that I got my hands on was the bubble shaped N-95 mask that is so tight and constricting around the mouth and cheekbones. I have really pronounced and high cheekbones so that mask wasn't happening for me. Not a problem because overnight the face mask business quickly evolved!
I posted this video I made on instagram today and it all just felt right to say. These are tough times but we are finding our way through it. I'm so proud of my city, my country and all of you. We're going to get through this....
