Heading back to the gym soon? I’m not going to lie, I never stopped going. My private training gym, The Fort in NYC, managed to stay open throughout most of 2020. To be safe, I adopted hygienic rituals every time I stepped into the gym or out. I continue to do this as numbers have returned to full capacity. It’s hard not to forget the year we endured or how easy it is to catch covid, so I’ve put together a short list of 3 products I use and highly recommend for keeping your fitness routine extra clean.
Post-workout or in-between workouts RECOVERY might not be for everyone but trust me, you'll come back stronger. I put RECOVERY in caps because it's so important to rest and rebuild your body after really intense sweat sessions. You break down to build up, but you also need to heal. Rest days and sufficient sleep will help you bounce back. Take this advice from someone (me) who didn't sleep enough for YEARS! I still don't sleep enough but I get at the very least 6-7 hours a night. Anything less and I'm literally dead.
Today I went to my SoulCycle "Outdoors" spin class here in NYC's Hudson Yards Plaza and the instructor leading the class said to everyone "2020 is over...it's DONE." I get why she said this. We all do, right? But as I was pedaling away I began to think about the last few months and how 'parts of 2020 weren't so bad'. Yes, 2020 (post-February and about a week or so into March) required lots of quarantining and social distancing, but it also required a lot of work to reach out and reconnect with friends and family.
I never had “baby fever” but in my late 30’s I knew with certainty that I wanted to be a mom. (Fyi, I'm 41 now.) For me, that was all I needed to know to make it a reality but there were some issues I still had to work through, and I was far from ready to plunge into baby making.
If you don't have a SodaStream in your life, you need to get one! I'm obsessed with mine but I have to admit that I got on the train a little late in life. I wish I had purchased one much sooner! So, I put together these recipes with the help of SodaStream to inspire everyone to reject the vending machine and all those delicious looking sugary drinks that get advertised to us all summer long. I know they look good on billboards and in commercials but so many carbonated drinks and sodas are loaded with sugar and sodium.
I kid you not that my SodaStream has become a healthy replacement tool. You can make your own fizzy drinks without the huge calorie intake. If you already have a SodaStream, you know what I'm talking about (just skip ahead to the recipes below). Drinks loaded with sodium (that seem to be lower in calories or have zero) will most often make you feel bloated and sluggish. Not good if you're trying to lose weight! The opposite will happen! I have a shoulder injury :( and it's something I've been working through for nearly a year. I started noticing the pain during my workouts but just thought it was some kind of exercise soreness. Then the area started to ache when I wasn't working out and I knew something was wrong. Even sleeping became incredibly painful. A few doctors and an MRI later, I found out that it was a SLAP tear, an injury specific to the labrum in the shoulder which surrounds the socket of the shoulder joint. In the fitness world, this injury is actually quite common. It requires that you stop all high intensity training, let it heal and then begin physical therapy or post-injury training. My doctor prescribed me Meloxicam for the inflammation and I also received 2 cortisone shots to reduce the pain. It's a very slow road to recovery and 3 months into it, I thought the pain would never end. But it's gotten so much better and I can definitely see the light at the end of the tunnel now (9 months...
